Bolotnaya Square

The low bank opposite the Kremlin has been called Boloto since the 14th century. In 1657 the Church of St Nicholas on Bersenevka went up beside it. The 1780s canal drained the floodplain. In 1931 Iofan’s House on the Embankment was finished. In 1947 the 800th-anniversary garden was planted; in 1958 the Repin monument. In December 2011 and May 2012 the square was political again. In 2021 GES-2 opened on Bolotnaya Embankment and Urs Fischer’s Big Clay went up beside it.
